“I’ve been knitting since I was a young child — about five years old — starting with simple squares full of dropped stitches and the occasional accidental extra one. My mum had a knitting machine (which I never learned to use), but as one of five children, I helped by sewing up the garments she knitted.

Socks had always seemed like a challenge I wasn’t quite ready for, until about two years ago when I came across a pattern that took the mystery out of sock knitting. My first few pairs were a bit wonky, but once I mastered the little techniques of working in the round, I was hooked. Since then, I’ve completed over 150 pairs of socks, some of which have been sent to various countries around the world, sold through a craft shop in Coromandel Town.

I live in the small seaside village of Kawhia, with a permanent population of about 350 that swells to over 3,000 during the summer months. It’s the perfect place to knit — quiet, inspiring, and connected to community.”
